2011 Maple Syrup
Producer of the Year

Weller's Sugar Bush
Birnamwood (Shawano County)
This particular person started making maple syrup in the 1940's, but then later his father sold all of the maple equipment.
In 1978 he decided along with his son that they wanted to start making maple syrup again. At this time, his son was in high school. They tapped 300 trees and through the years kept adding a little here and a little there. They started cooking on a 2x6' flat pan and today they cook on a 4x12' evaporator and run a RO machine, which was purchased in 2009. In January of last year, he sold the maple business to his son and wife.
Today they tap about 2,400 taps and buy sap from another 2,000 taps.
They have helped work at the Wisconsin State Fair Booth and have been a host on a maple tour a few years ago. They attend many of the maple institutes, meetings, and when they can fit it in their busy work schedule, they attend our fall tours.
At this time, we normally have the family come up, but we are sorry to say that this family was not able to attend our tour this year, as they had a wedding that they had to attend.
This sugar bush is known as Weller's Sugar Bush and is presently owned and operated by Gus and Diane Weller. Gus's dad, Gustave was the previous owner who sold out to his son.
